Manchester United 0-0 Middlesbrough AET (1-3 on penalties) player ratings: Depay and Wilson flop as Reds crash out of League Cup

Have a look at how James Robson rated the Reds after they suffered a penalty shootout defeat to their Championship visitors

Romero

A Jekyll and Hydge performance. Almost allowed Blind’s back-pass to beat him, but then produced to two fine saves to deny Boro at the death. 6

Darmian

Short of ambition in the first half, but improved after the break, to provide more of a threat on the right. 6

Smalling

One of those who were expected to be rested, but Van Gaal opted to stick with the in-form defender. Ended up have a tougher night than he might have expected, but another commanding display. 7

Blind

His heart must have been in his mouth as his back-pass looked set to beat Romero.
Debatable whether he did enough to keep his place. 6

Rojo

Didn’t offer the offensive threat United would have liked.
Replaced by Young just after the hour. 5

Carrick

Provided a shield for the defence and steady cover for Pereira to allow the Brazilian to try to get forward, particularly after half time. 6

Fellaini

Generally tried to make himself a nuisance in the final third.
A useful target, he led the line in extra time, but missed a great chance to win it at the death. 6

Lingard

Lucky not to be booked in the first half half. Always looking to attack.
Produced fine effort that rebounded off the post in stoppage time. 6

Pereira

Looks at home in a United shirt. Played deeper than expected, but confident in possession and pressed further forward, with his runs troubling Boro. 7

Depay

The Dutchman really needed a big night, but it was another frustrating evening.
Moved from left to right with little joy. Improved after the break, but still failed to shine. 5

Wilson

Struggled to get into the game on his first start of the season.
Hard to blame him too much - suffered as a result of a lack of service. 5

Rooney (for Wilson, 45)

His introduction made a difference.
Gave United much more thrust in the attacking third before dropping into midfield in extra time. 6

Young (for Rojo, 61)

More of an attacking option than Rojo at left back.
Provided more of an outlet out wide, but still forced to defend. 5

Martial (for Depay, 71)

Came on in a wide role, when he might have been more of a threat to Boro in the centre.
Was eventually moved into a orthodox striking position in extra time and missed a golden chanceto win it. 6
Not used: De Gea, Mata, Herrera, Schweinsteiger
